Ralph C. wrote on 6th Mar 2012, 4:04h: This song was featured in the 1947 movie La Enamorada, with Pedro Armendariz and Maria Felix..in it he plays a rebel leader that falls in love with the daughter of the richest man in a town he just took over...she won't have anything to do with him so he comes to her balcony and pours his heart out to hear and bring marachis to sing this song to her...that gets her attention and slowly begins to look at him in a different light...the movie is just as passionate as the song...but the english translation here is really off...i think MarioC hit it on the head with his translation...my dad who was from Mexico, translated this song to me when i was little and again, MarioC is closes to what is being said.. |

The guy is saying he doesn't want her to blink because he can't stand to not see her eyes "rose leaves" does not belong. "salerosa" isn't easily translatable, but it means something like "charming". The best line in the song "besar tus labios quisiera" doesn't mean "to kiss your wanted lips". "quisiera" is the verb in the sentence. It's a weird form of "want" that we don't really use in English, but the line sort of means "I would love to kiss your lips". The guy is saying basically: I would love to kiss your lips, you charming woman, and tell you my dear that you are beautiful and bewitching...just like the truth of a rose (a pun sort of on the "rosa" in the word "salerosa") He then goes on to say: And if my poverty causes you to scorn me, I'll give you that right. I can't offer you riches but I offer you my heart in exchange for my poverty. It IS a beautiful passionate song. This guy meets a rich beautiful woman, and knows he has nothing to give her that would impress her...other than his heart. He would give anything to kiss her and tell her how beautiful she is, but he has nothing to give... |
